Lead Shelf Operator Steven Roberts recently submitted a WATCH card detailing his use of stop work authority (SWA) prior to offload operations with an inexperienced deckhand. Steven called a meeting to review several important reminders for the crew to keep in mind to ensure safe operations. Great job, Steven! Thank you for coaching new workers and reminding everyone the importance of safe work.

“Prior to starting offload boat operations during the JSA discussion, the captain notified us that his deckhand was a green hand (SSE) even though he had attended crane rigging school. I asked the boat captain to have the deckhand meet in the pilot house, so the crane operator and all parties could go over the lift procedures. We emphasized the importance of wearing impact gloves; checking sling and shackle conditions; watching hand position when attaching hookup to D-ring; once the load is attached to get clear of lift and do not try to grab load to stop it from swinging; and stay well out from under the load until it is lifted and swung out from over the boat deck. We also reviewed hand signals and use of radio and reminded him that if he saw anything that might hang up the load while lifting to be sure the crane operator was aware. All lifts went smoothly, and the deckhand performed well and had a good awareness of his surroundings during the lift.”
